Girls Varsity Volleyball vs. ANNANDALE HS

Game Date
Nov 2, 2009

The Lake Braddock Bruins opened district play against a team that beat them rather decisively just 4 days earlier.  While the Annandale Atoms garnered home court advantage from the previous win it wasn't enough to advance them to the semi-finals of the district tournament.  The Bruins won in 3 sets by scores of 25-20, 26-24, and 25-23.

In the first game there were lots of nerves on both sides and service mistakes were a plenty.  The Bruins found a way to capture an 11-8 lead and probably shocked the Atoms a bit by holding on for a 25-20 win.  Imani Hudson hit .500 in the game and really forced the Atoms to try and answer back offensively.

In the 2nd game the Bruins jumped on the atoms.  Annnandale tried to pick up their offense but their efforts led to more errors than kills.  The Bruins started off up 5-0 and then pushed it to 14-3.  The Atoms stormed back behind great serving.  The game was pushed to 17-12 and Freshman Kyra Rodi rolled her ankle and was done for the match.  The Bruins were facing adversity and had to make some lineup changes and strategic adjustments.  The Bruins switched from running a 6-2 to a 5-1 and everyone filled in where they could.  Nonetheless, the Atoms really fought back and tied the game up at 24-24.  Then another bit of adversity hit the Bruins.  On the ensuing play the Atoms outside hitter hit line and knocked the antenna right off the net.  The referees were not sure if the ball had hit the antenna so they called a replay.  The Bruins players thought they had just won a huge point, but had to do it again.  Nonetheless the girls were not shaken and they won the next 2 points to win 26-24.

In game three the Bruins got down early 9-3.  The service game of the Atoms was giving the Bruins fits once again.  The Bruins stuck with it though and really fought for each other.  No one was going to let the ball hit the ground with diving after it.  The Bruins tied the game up at 14-14 and kept on pushing to a 24-20 lead.  The Atoms called a timeout knowing that one more point would end their season and came out inspired.  They won the next 3 points but couldn't get any further than that as the Bruins won the set and the match.

Coach Clark commented "I couldn't be more proud of the way the girls came together tonight.  It was a true team effort that the girls will always remember."  Assistant coach Mike Clark added, "I couldn't be happier for this group.  They were selfless, inspired, and unshakeable."

The Bruins really had a great team performance on the night as every single player played and every single player contributed big time to earn the win.

Senior setter Jen Daniels (#6) really came up huge for the Bruins.  She had been out for over a week with an illness but came back with one of, if not the, best performances of her career.  She was asked to switch from a 6-2 to a 5-1 half way through the 2nd game, but she wouldn't let anything interrupt her great play.  The Bruins struggled with serve receive on the night but Jen managed to keep the Bruins offense going.  She gave the hitters a chance to make plays and really led the team tonight.

Sophomore Imani Hudson(#4) hit .130 on the night and had 7 kills, but it was her ability to put pressure on the Atoms that really impressed her coaching staff.  Coach Clark commented, "Imani put a lot of balls int he court that didn't end up as kills, but they did give the Atoms a tough time and certainly took them out of system a great deal."  Imani also had 1 solo block and 2 assist blocks and had 14 digs.

Junior Tara Fialkow (#11) had an all around great game.  She hit .286 for the Bruins, had 8 kills, and 12 digs.  She played great defense and was also on the finding a way to get the ball up for the Bruins.

Jamie Cachuela hit .400 on 5 attempts and had 2 digs and did not miss a serve on 6 attempts.  Megan Kelley did a great job serving and playing defense on the night.  Libero Emily Lavery had 14 digs and made all 13 of her serves.  Danielle Ager had great energy for the Bruins, she totaled 4 digs and did a nice job blocking.  Logan Russell was an offensive and defensive leader for the Bruins as she hit .267 with 5 kills on the night and had 2 solo blocks while really controlling the net for the Bruins.  Catherine Jamshidi hit .154 with 5 kills, 2 digs, 2 aces, 2 assist blocks and a solo block.  Kyra Rodi, while playing only a game and a half hit .375 with 3 kills, 3 digs, 6 assists on 16 attempts.

The win qualifies the Bruins for the regional tournament which starts next week and moves the Bruins into the semi-finals of the district tournament.  The Bruins will have to get their games going again as they will face the #1 seed from the district and the #4 ranked team in the region: South County.
